From diabetes to sourdough: the story behind Burrah

For many people, a diabetes diagnosis can feel like an unexpected setback. For Mashael bint Naser al Shabibi, it became the beginning of a journey that would reshape her relationship with food, health and purpose.

Today, Al Shabibi is the founder of Burrah, described as the first brand in Oman dedicated to sourdough bread. But behind the growing demand for its naturally fermented baked goods is a story that began not with business ambition, but with a personal health challenge.

At the age of 27, Al Shabibi was diagnosed with diabetes. The news pushed her to reconsider her lifestyle and begin searching for ways to better manage her health. Guided by the belief that every illness has a remedy, she began researching the connection between nutrition and wellbeing.

That search led her to sourdough.

She became drawn to the world of natural fermentation, particularly the beneficial bacteria produced during the slow fermentation process and its links to digestive health. As she learned more, she realised that sourdough could offer an alternative for people looking for more mindful food choices.

What began as a personal journey soon grew into something bigger. Al Shabibi noticed that many people around her were asking similar questions about healthier eating, yet authentic sourdough products were still not widely available in the local market.

That gap became the seed for Burrah.

Specialising in sourdough bread and naturally fermented baked goods, Burrah was created with a mission that goes beyond baking. The brand aims to raise awareness about better food choices while offering products made through traditional fermentation methods. Among its offerings are naturally fermented American-style bagels, making Burrah one of the early brands to introduce such products to the Omani market.

Even the name Burrah reflects the community spirit behind the brand. Rather than choosing it alone, Al Shabibi invited her followers to take part in the decision through a public vote. The final name became a shared choice, reinforcing the bond between the founder and the community that had encouraged her from the beginning.

One of the defining moments in her journey came in August 2025. By then, the idea of Burrah had become difficult to ignore. Messages of support were arriving daily from people eager to see the project come to life. Their encouragement gave her confidence that the community was ready for what she wanted to build.

Al Shabibi says she never allowed challenges to overshadow her purpose. She credits her progress to faith, determination and the support she received from those around her. Today, her focus is on expanding production capacity to meet growing demand and make sourdough products more accessible across Oman.

Perhaps most strikingly, she does not describe diabetes as an obstacle. Instead, she sees it as one of life’s most valuable lessons. The experience taught her responsibility, patience and the importance of sharing knowledge. While many may describe her as an entrepreneur, she sees herself as someone carrying a responsibility towards people searching for healthier alternatives.

For Al Shabibi, Burrah is more than a business venture. It is a mission built on care, awareness and community.

One message in particular has stayed with her. A woman battling advanced-stage cancer reached out after trying Burrah’s bread. Restricted by a highly limited diet, she shared how grateful she was to enjoy something she genuinely loved. The message deeply moved Al Shabibi and strengthened her belief that food can carry meaning far beyond nutrition.

As a business owner in the food sector, she believes integrity is essential. Food, she says, should never be treated as just another product. It carries a responsibility towards people’s health and wellbeing, making quality, transparency and honesty non-negotiable.

What began as a personal health challenge has grown into a movement promoting awareness, connection and healthier choices. Through Burrah, Mashael bint Naser al Shabibi has transformed her experience into a mission, proving that some of life’s most meaningful opportunities can emerge from its most unexpected challenges.
